Nkiru Vance, UT School of Dentistry

As an Albert Schweitzer Fellow, I hope to educate 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at the Fort Bend Boys and Girls Club on oral healthcare and careers in dentistry.

I am a 1st year dental hygiene student at the University of Texas Health and Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry. My project consists of educating elementary school students in low-income communities, along with their families, about proper oral health care and nutrition. By educating these children, I hope to help improve the oral health practices of future generations ultimately decreasing the occurrence of oral health disparities in these communities.

As a Schweitzer Fellow, I hope to gain the skills, experience and resources necessary to continue educating and serving underserved communities throughout my dental career. I am looking forward to meeting the other fellows and learning more about their projects. I hope to learn a great deal from this experience and also build lasting relationships!
