Meet Nkiru Vance

Oct 2015

The project is flowing like clockwork! There were a few topics that had to be rescheduled but the children are still excited about coming every week and they are learning! I love seeing the excitement in their eyes when they discover something new!

Sept 2015

I am very happy with the group that I have for my project. At first I was worried that I wouldn’t get more than 4 participants but 15 signed up! They way I look at it, if I have at least 6 students each class, I’ll have a full class. I have had 8-10 so far so hopefully, I will be able to retain them each week.

August 2015

This month, I was a little disappointed to see that only one of the prospective students from the summer returned for the fall semester. The list I made during the summer was practically useless and I now have to start recruiting again. I was aware that the roster may change but I didn’t think it would change this drastically. Lesson learned.

July 2015

As I’m getting to know the students, I am beginning to understand what their needs may be and what their mindsets are. I am considering adding a few components to my project. In addition to oral care education and sparking an interest in the dental field I may include character-building lessons that help build pride and develop higher self-esteem.

June 2015

I feel like my project is moving at a snail’s pace. It can get easy to put it on the back burner because there are so many other obligations at the forefront of my mind with school and the current stage of my project. I have to make a conscious effort to include my project in my weekly schedule in order to meet my deadlines. As I prepare for my final year of school, I hope to find a comfortable balance leading to the success of my project and my academic career.

May 2015

It seems like my project is starting off a little slow but I am looking forward to getting everything confirmed and finalized. The staff at my site seems very kind and willing to incorporate my project into their program. As a former elementary educator currently pursuing a career in dentistry, I am very excited for this opportunity to merge the two fields and effect change in the lives and health of children.
