Hello Readers! This month I spent a lot of time on the curriculum and revamping my project. In the process, I was able to create a film series that I will most likely be showing with the YWCA. The film series is a way to showcase some mental health issues and hopefully these movies will drive powerful and helpful conversation. Some of the films featured include Inside out and silver linings playbook. I’m looking forward to the progress of the fil series next month.

Hello Readers! The biggest thing I did this month was to partner with a non-profit organization Style lottery and hold a clothing swap in which the left over clothes would be donated to the YWCA for a discussion on Self-esteem and dressing for your body type. Below are a few picture from the event:

wanted to share with you one of the most fun activities I have done to date. This month I got the opportunity to start working with the girls at the BGCH. Our last meeting we talked about finger prints and compared the uniqueness of finger prints to being a unique individual. At the end of the meeting we made our own Hollywood walk of fame. Here’s a collage of pictures:

What I enjoyed most about this activity was talking to the girls about something they each appreciated about themselves. It was a fun and rewarding experience. Looking forward to our meetings next month.

Hello readers!

Since the last post I was able to incorporate changes into my project. I’m going to share the experience from the last meeting. One of the topics the ladies at the YWCA wanted to talk about was planning/ how to be successful. I put together and shared 12 habits of highly productive people

  1. Dedicated planning time
  2. Take care of quick tasks immediately
  3. Prioritize to-do list
  4. Identify and utilize productivity windows
  5. When to (when not to) multi-task
  6. Planning/ Scheduling tool
  7. Breaks
  8. Realistic about how long things take
  9. Accountability buddy
  10. Perfectionist when it counts
  11. Delegate the right way
  12. Appreciate what did get done instead of stressing over what didn’t.

It was a fun discussion, I got to hear how the ladies plan as well as share my own planning tips. After the discussion,we made D.I.Y dry erase calendars:

Tools:  Picture frame(any size), post it notes or paint swatch cards, tape, dry erase marker.

Hello readers!

I hope your summer was amazing. This past month I met with my primary clients, the ladies in the YWCA residential program. Every week, they have a WILD group meeting in which they discuss various housekeeping issues and other important matters. I got the opportunity to meet the ladies in person and introduce the project to them. They were very welcoming and seemed excited about me working with them throughout the year. After the meeting I got to tour the residence and it was a beautiful place. The YWCA has about 9-10 beds for women that need transitional housing. It is fully furnished and decorated beautifully.

After meeting with the ladies I decided to restructure my project. Prior to the meeting, I had planned for my project to be a 6 week rolling program, however due to scheduling and the clients, I have decided to make this a continuous program with a variety of topics suggested by the clients. In addition to this, I plan to work with the clients on creative projects that focus on the topics of discussion.

I’m looking forward to the working on the new structure of my project and updating you all on the progress.

Have a wonderful day,

Tobi

Hello readers!

I was finally able to have my first meeting. It was definitely an experience. The YWCA has a summer jobs program in which they help/offer about 90 Houston area youth jobs with pay for the summer. How exciting is that?

As a part of the summer jobs program the youth are required to meet at various times during the summer. During these meetings various speakers engage with the youth. I had the opportunity to speak to the youth on body image and self-esteem. It was a fulfilling and wonderful experience.

The most interesting part was the art project they got to do. Prior to the discussion, I asked the group to create an image board. The board included 3 parts: my image, my shell and my mind. It was awesome to see varying perspectives of body image on paper.

I felt like majority of the youth I interacted with had very health perceptions of their image and themselves. We also came up with ways to boost both personal self-esteem and the self-esteem of others. We discussed the idea of mirror images and took a pledge to “love thyself”. I’m looking forward to future meetings.

Thank you for reading,

Hello!
In this blog entry I will be discussing my current curriculum. While working on my curriculum, I stumbled upon the dove self-esteem fund. It is amazing to see a multi-million dollar company working on a project that enriches the minds of the kids and youth in the community. I will be using some of the art projects as well as lesson guides to build my curriculum throughout the year. You can check it out here.

Hello!

For this month’s blog entry, I will be discussing how the M.E project name was coined. I’m not the greatest at naming things but I wanted something that was a reflection of “self”. I also wanted a name that would attract people to the group. I thought that since this project focuses on individual wellness it can be “project me” and then I thought mind enrichment, hence the “M.E project” was born. The M.E project is a mind enrichment program focused on engaging youth 14-20 in wellness practices through creative expressions and education to foster healthier lifestyle practices. I can’t wait to update you all on the progress of this program throughout the year.
